Tomb Raider: A Metacritic history

The first game in the Tomb Raider franchise came out back in 1996. Since then the series has gone through several different reboots and a number of games over the last two decades. This look at Tomb Raider’s Metacritic history will feature most of the major releases in the series.

This will not count three games in the series, The Last Revelation (1999), Tomb Raider (2000) and Curse of the Sword (2001) since they do not have any reviews on the site. It will also not count certain systems for certain games (like the PC version of Tomb Raider I) since they did also not have any reviews. Nor will it count versions like Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition or Rise of the Tomb Raider – 20 Year Celebration Edition.

Tomb Raider’s Metacritic history

Seven out of the 16 (43.75%) games in the Tomb Raider franchise on Metacritic have an average score over 80. After the Franchise hit rock-bottom with Angel of Darkness in 2003, it recovered well with the first reboot trilogy (Legend, Anniversary and Underworld). With the most recent reboot trilogy (Tomb Raider, Rise, and Shadow) the series has since its best scores since Tomb Raider II.

The graph below shows the total number of combined reviews on Metacritic for all systems that each Tomb Raider game has been on.

Number of Metacritic reviews for each Tomb Raider game (1).png

To calculate the average critic score for a game I weighed the number of reviews. As an example, for Rise of the Tomb Raider I took the 102 Xbox One reviews and multiplied it by there average score of 86. I then did the same for the PC reviews. I then took both those numbers, added them together and divided it by the total number of critic scores to get the average Metacritic score.

Comparing the best, worst and oldest players at each position in Madden 19 against Madden 03

With the release of Madden 19 last week I decided to do some roster comparisons between it and arguably the best game in the seriesMadden 03. Using the day one roster for both games, I took a look at comparing the best, worst and oldest player at each position in terms of there overall rating. Beyond that, I also noted which players in Madden 03 were still around to be in Madden 19.

Quarterback

Tom Brady is the only player in Madden 03 or Madden 19 to be both the highest rated player as well as the oldest player at his position.

Technically, there are a number of players listed at tight end in Madden 19 with a worse rating then Alan Cross. However, Cross is the lowest rated actual tight end as all players worse then him are all full-time long snappers in real life.

Center

In Madden 03 there are three players, Ethan Albright (38), Joe Maese (36) and J. Philipe Darche (36) listed at center with a worse rating than Kevin Dogins. Same in Madden 19, as Nick Sundberg (54) and Garrison Sanborn (54) have lower ratings then Thompson or Hassenauer. However, all of these players are actually full-time long-snappers and not centers.

Interestingly enough, Shawn Price managed to end up with the same overall rating as his age, which likely does not happen very often. Also, he is in his ninth professional season as a pro. At the time of Madden 03, Neil Rackers was the worst kicker in the game, having only made 29/49 (59.2%) of his career field goals. From this point forward, Rackers went from being the worst kicker to having a very successful career. Over the next 10 seasons, he made 235/281 (83.6%) of his field goals. Graphs and Madden 03 players in Madden 19

The following three graphs take all the information above and show side by side the comparisons between both games in terms of worst player, best player and oldest player at each position.

Out of the 24 players in Madden 03 who were the worst at there position, none of them were rookies. However, in Madden 19 25/33 (75.75%) of the worst players at each position were rookies. The only positions in Madden 19 where the worst positions players didn’t feature a rookie were QB, RB, FB, WR, TE, and Punter.

Overall rating for worst players at each position for Madden 03 compared to Madden 19

The biggest difference between the two Maddens is how the ratings for the top fullback, kicker, and punter have fallen off of a cliff over the last 16 years.

Overall rating for best players at each position for Madden 03 compared to Madden 19

Madden 03 featured four players 40 or older (C, CB, K, and P) who were the oldest at their respective position. In comparison, Madden 18 has three such players at QB, K, and P.

Age of oldest player(s) at each position for Madden 03 compared to Madden 19

The table below shows the eight players who appear in Madden 03 who are still around in Madden 19. Everything on the left is from 03 (Brady being 24), while the right is from 19 (Brady now being 41).

Current Atlanta Falcons kicker Matt Bryant is the only player in Madden 19 who played during the 2002-03 season (his debut season in the league, Bryant went undrafted in 1999) and was not featured in Madden 03.

Madden: A Metacritic history

The first game in the Madden franchise released all the way back in 1988, with John Madden Football. Since then the series has seen a release every single year, going through five different generations of consoles, as well as PC, mobile and handheld systems.

This look at Madden’s Metacritic history starts with Madden NFL 2001, the first to have review scores on the site. It will only look at the main games in the series, so no handheld/mobile only games or spinoffs will be accounted for. It will also only factor in console/PC scores and not those for handheld/mobile.

Madden’s Metacritic history

17 out of the 19 (89.47%) games in the Madden franchise on Metacritic have an average score over 80. However, only 3/19 (15.78%) have a score over 90. The last time a Madden game reach those heights among reviewers was Madden 05. Since then the series has consistently gotten about the same aggregate scores with each installment.

Average Metacritic score of every Madden game

The graph below shows the total number of combined reviews for all non-handheld/mobile systems that each Madden game has been on.

Number of Metacritic reviews for each Madden game

To calculate the average critic score for a game I weighed the number of reviews. As an example, for Madden 17 I took the 30 Xbox One reviews and multiplied it by there average score of 83. I then did the same for the PlayStation 4. I then took both those numbers, added them together and divided it by the total number of critic scores to get the average Metacritic score.

Game Year Systems Metacritic Score # of Critics Avg Critic Score

Despite not factoring in the handheld or mobile scores into the above graphs for the mainline Madden games, I did take separate note of them to share in the table below for anyone interested.

Finally, let’s take a look at the highest and lowest scores that each Madden game has received, as well as what percentage of reviews gave a game a perfect score of 100. Oddly enough, since Madden 10 every game in the series with the exception of Madden 17 has not gotten a lower score than 60 from any Metacritic review.
