Tomb Raider: A Metacritic history

The first game in the Tomb Raider franchise came out back in 1996. Since then the series has gone through several different reboots and a number of games over the last two decades. This look at Tomb Raider’s Metacritic history will feature most of the major releases in the series.

This will not count three games in the series, The Last Revelation (1999), Tomb Raider (2000) and Curse of the Sword (2001) since they do not have any reviews on the site. It will also not count certain systems for certain games (like the PC version of Tomb Raider I) since they did also not have any reviews. Nor will it count versions like Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition or Rise of the Tomb Raider – 20 Year Celebration Edition.

Tomb Raider’s Metacritic history

Seven out of the 16 (43.75%) games in the Tomb Raider franchise on Metacritic have an average score over 80. After the Franchise hit rock-bottom with Angel of Darkness in 2003, it recovered well with the first reboot trilogy (Legend, Anniversary and Underworld). With the most recent reboot trilogy (Tomb Raider, Rise, and Shadow) the series has since its best scores since Tomb Raider II.

The graph below shows the total number of combined reviews on Metacritic for all systems that each Tomb Raider game has been on.

To calculate the average critic score for a game I weighed the number of reviews. As an example, for Rise of the Tomb Raider I took the 102 Xbox One reviews and multiplied it by there average score of 86. I then did the same for the PC reviews. I then took both those numbers, added them together and divided it by the total number of critic scores to get the average Metacritic score.

Madden: A Metacritic history

The first game in the Madden franchise released all the way back in 1988, with John Madden Football. Since then the series has seen a release every single year, going through five different generations of consoles, as well as PC, mobile and handheld systems.

This look at Madden’s Metacritic history starts with Madden NFL 2001, the first to have review scores on the site. It will only look at the main games in the series, so no handheld/mobile only games or spinoffs will be accounted for. It will also only factor in console/PC scores and not those for handheld/mobile.

Madden’s Metacritic history

17 out of the 19 (89.47%) games in the Madden franchise on Metacritic have an average score over 80. However, only 3/19 (15.78%) have a score over 90. The last time a Madden game reach those heights among reviewers was Madden 05. Since then the series has consistently gotten about the same aggregate scores with each installment.

Average Metacritic score of every Madden game

The graph below shows the total number of combined reviews for all non-handheld/mobile systems that each Madden game has been on.

Number of Metacritic reviews for each Madden game

To calculate the average critic score for a game I weighed the number of reviews. As an example, for Madden 17 I took the 30 Xbox One reviews and multiplied it by there average score of 83. I then did the same for the PlayStation 4. I then took both those numbers, added them together and divided it by the total number of critic scores to get the average Metacritic score.

Battlefield: A Metacritic history

The first game in the Battlefield franchise, Battlefield 1942, came out back in 2002. Since then the franchise has grown to become one of the best-known in the FPS (First-Person Shooter) genre. Unlike its rival Call of Duty, the series has made its mark with larger maps, more open multiplayer gameplay and the use of vehicles.

Battlefield’s Metacritic history

Only 1 out of 14 (7.14%) games in the Battlefield franchise has an average Metacritic score over 90. Meanwhile, 10 of the 14 games (71.42%) have gotten an average score of at least an 80.

I did not factor in Battlefield: Online or the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 versions of Battlefield: Hardline since they have no reviews on Metacritic. I also did not factor in the iOS reviews of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 into that game’s score.

Call of Duty: A Metacritic history

The original Call of Duty came out back in 2003 and since then the franchise has grown to become one of the most popular and best-selling in all of gaming. The franchise truly took off in 2007 with the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which saw the series replace its World War II setting that had been the setting for all previous games.

Call of Duty’s Metacritic history

3 out of 16 (18.75%) games in the Call of Duty franchise have an average Metacritic score over 90. Meanwhile, 11 of the 16 games (68.75%) have gotten an average score of at least an 80.Avg critic score each game

I did not factor in remasted or re-releases (COD: War Collection or Modern Warfare: Remastered), as well as any mobile or handheld games in the series. I also did not factor in Black Ops III on the 360 or PS3 since there were only four total reviews.  The only main Call of Duty game I did not count was World at War: Finals Fronts since it only has two critic reviews.

Halo: A Metacritic History

Halo: Combat Evolved came out back in 2001 and helped to propel Microsoft’s new Xbox console front and center into the video game world. Since then the series has seen new developers going from Bungie to 343 Industries, as well as having spin-offs and remasters.

Overall, there have been 13 Halo games since 2001 and the franchise has stayed as Microsoft’s premiere exclusive for its Xbox console through three generations. Now, let’s see how the series that helped revolutionize console shooters have been judged by critics through Metacritic.

Halo’s Metacritic history

4 out of 13 (30.76%) games in the Halo franchise have an average Metacritic score over 90. Meanwhile, 10 of their 13 games (76.92%) have gotten an average score of at least an 80.

I did not factor in the PC versions of Halo and Halo 2 into these scores, as well as the iOS version of Halo: Spartan Strike. This is due to the fact that they Spartan Assault and Halo came out for these systems two years after they originally released, while it was a three-year difference for Halo 2.

To calculate the average critic score for a game I weighed the number of reviews. As an example, for Halo Wars 2 I took the 79 Xbox One reviews and multiplied it by there average score of 79. I then did the same for the PC score. I then took both those numbers, added them together and divided it by the total number of critic scores to get the average score.

Bioware: A Metacritic history

Bioware was founded back in 1995 by the trio of Ray Muzyka, Greg Zescuk, and Augustine Yip. Over the last 23 years, the company has gone from working with Interplay Productions to Microsoft Game Studios and then being acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2007.

The company has built its reputation on mostly crafting single-player role-playing games (RPGs). Bioware has developed 18 games in their history and this article will look at how reviews have judged their games through Metacritic.

Three of Bioware’s games (Shattered Steel, Mass Effect: Galaxy, Dragon Age: Legends) will not be on here as they have no scores on the site.

Bioware’s Metacritic history

6 of the 15 games (40%) of Bioware’s games have an average Metacritic score over 90. Meanwhile, 13 of their 15 games (86%) have gotten an average score of at least an 80.

Bioware Metacritic scores

Every Bioware game that has been on multiple systems has at least 100 critic reviews. Mass Effect 2 is the only Bioware game to have over 200 critic reviews.

To calculate the average critic score for a game I weighed the number of reviews. As an example, for Kotor I took the 33 PC reviews and multiplied it by there average score of 93. I then did the same for the Xbox score. I then took both those numbers, added them together and divided it by the total number of critic scores to get the average score.

Finally let’s take a look at the highest and lowest scores that each Bioware game has gottten, as well as what percentage of reviews gave a game a perfect score of 100.

Mass Effect: Andromeda 95 (2) 35 (1) 0%

*Only two of Mass Effect 2’s 215 reviews gave it under an 80.

Bioware’s next game Anthem is scheduled to have a 2019 release date after it got delayed earlier this year. The company’s history says that this should be a well-received game by critics. However, they are coming off their worse received game in Mass Effect: Andromeda and will need to prove themselves to those that have become skeptics.
