Olivia de Havilland and the age of the Gone with the Wind cast

Yesterday, legendary Hollywood actress Olivia de Havilland celebrated her 102nd birthday. Havilland appeared in sixty different films, TV movies, and TV series during her acting career which started in the mid-1930s and ended in the late 1980s.

She is a two-time Academy Award winner, taking home the award for Best Actress in 1947 (To Each His Own) and again in 1950 (The Heiress). Havilland was also a two-time nominee for the award in 1942 (Hold Back the Dawn) and 1949 (The Snake Pit), as well as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress in 1940 (Gone with the Wind).

Gone With the Wind, where Havilland plays Melaine Hamilton, is one of her best-known roles due to its massive success and popularity. The film, an adaption of the 1936 Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Margaret Mitchell, is regarded as one the best movies ever made and has had a massive impact on American culture.

Age and timeline for Gone with the Wind cast

According to IMDB, Gone with the Wind has 43 actors and actresses that were credited in the making of the 1939 film. Only two of those 43 are still alive, the aforementioned Olivia de Havilland and Mickey Kuhn, who was one of Hollywood’s staple child actors in the 1930s and 1940s.

Out of the 43, ten of them did not make it to 60 years of age, including the two stars of the film Vivien Leigh (53) and Clark Gable (59). On the flip side, seven members of cast lived to be or are currently at least 90. The oldest (not counting Havilland) was Alicia Rhett, (98) who played India Wilkes in what would be her solo acting credit.

The top of the graph (in orange) are all of the male cast members, while the bottom of the graph (in very light pink) are the female cast members. In both cases, the timeline goes outward from the oldest people (in terms of date of birth) to the most recent.
