Call of Duty: A Metacritic history

The original Call of Duty came out back in 2003 and since then the franchise has grown to become one of the most popular and best-selling in all of gaming. The franchise truly took off in 2007 with the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which saw the series replace its World War II setting that had been the setting for all previous games.

Call of Duty’s Metacritic history

3 out of 16 (18.75%) games in the Call of Duty franchise have an average Metacritic score over 90. Meanwhile, 11 of the 16 games (68.75%) have gotten an average score of at least an 80.Avg critic score each game

I did not factor in remasted or re-releases (COD: War Collection or Modern Warfare: Remastered), as well as any mobile or handheld games in the series. I also did not factor in Black Ops III on the 360 or PS3 since there were only four total reviews.  The only main Call of Duty game I did not count was World at War: Finals Fronts since it only has two critic reviews.

Game Release System Critic Score # of Critics
WAW: Final Fronts 2008 PS2 90, 45 2
Black Ops III 2015 Xbox 360 70, 70 2
Black Ops III 2015  PS3 70 1

Number of critic reviews.png

To calculate the average critic score for a game I weighed the number of reviews. As an example, for Call of Duty 2, I took the 64 PC reviews and multiplied it by there average score of 86. I then did the same for the Xbox score. I then took both those numbers, added them together and divided it by the total number of critic scores to get the average score.

The next game in the Call of Duty series is Black Ops 4, which was officially revealed by Activision today. This will also continue the franchise’s streak of having a main series release every year since Call of Duty 2 in 2005.
